By September, winter is beginning to loosen its grip on the Free State. The fields may still look quiet, but for grain farmers, this is an important part of the farming calendar.
The weeks before the summer rains arrive are not simply a waiting period. They are an opportunity to prepare fields, check machinery, review soil conditions and make some of the decisions that will affect the coming maize and soya season.
In dryland farming, there are always factors outside a farmer’s control. Rainfall is the obvious one. What can be controlled is how well prepared the farm is when suitable planting conditions finally arrive.
Planting starts long before seed goes into the ground
It is easy to think of planting as the moment the planter enters the field. In reality, successful planting begins months earlier.
Soil condition, crop rotation, input planning, machinery maintenance and field preparation all influence what happens when the first meaningful summer rains arrive.
This preparation matters particularly in the Free State, where maize and soybean planting windows can vary considerably between regions. Eastern production areas generally begin earlier, while farmers further west often plant later as rainfall patterns and soil moisture conditions change across the province.
The important point is not to chase a date on the calendar. It is to be ready when the right conditions arrive.
Start with the soil
Healthy crops depend on what is happening below the surface.
Soil testing gives farmers a clearer picture of factors such as soil acidity and nutrient availability before expensive inputs are committed to a crop. Correcting problems beforehand can help ensure that nutrients applied during the season are actually available to the plants.
Grain SA has repeatedly highlighted soil sampling, pH, phosphorus and potassium levels as important considerations before planting.
For a dryland operation, the ability of the soil to capture and retain moisture is equally important.
Rain that falls before and during the planting season is valuable only if the soil profile can make effective use of it. Soil structure, compaction, residue cover and previous cultivation practices can all influence how much water enters the soil and how quickly it is lost again.
That makes moisture conservation part of planting preparation, not something that begins after the crop has emerged.
Protect the moisture you already have
Water remains one of the biggest limiting factors in dryland grain production.
Long-term rainfall totals are useful, but they do not tell the whole story. Two seasons receiving a similar total amount of rain can produce very different results depending on when that rain falls.
A crop needs moisture at the right stages of development.
This is why conserving existing soil moisture and preparing fields to absorb future rainfall is so important. Grain SA research and guidance for Free State production areas continues to emphasise moisture conservation as an important part of managing the risk associated with variable rainfall.
Good preparation does not guarantee a good rainfall season. It simply puts the farm in a stronger position to take advantage of the rain that does arrive.
Machinery should be ready before the planting window opens
Planting season compresses a large amount of work into a relatively short period.
A mechanical problem that would be a minor inconvenience during winter can become an expensive delay when soil moisture is right and hundreds of hectares are waiting to be planted.
Tractors, planters and other implements should therefore be inspected and serviced before they are needed.
Wear parts, bearings, tyres, hydraulic systems, seed metering equipment and other planting components can all be checked while there is still time to repair or replace them.
Grain SA’s pre-season recommendations similarly encourage farmers to service tractors and planters and arrange necessary spares ahead of planting.
The objective is simple: when conditions are suitable, machinery should not be the reason planting has to stop.
Input decisions also need to be made early
Seed and fertiliser represent a significant investment before a crop has produced a single tonne.
Choosing varieties, determining fertiliser requirements and planning how available hectares will be allocated between crops are therefore important business decisions as much as agronomic ones.
Yield potential differs from field to field. Previous crop performance, soil type, rotation history and available moisture all need to form part of the decision.
Planting more hectares is not automatically better if it means stretching inputs across marginal ground or taking unnecessary production risk.
This is particularly relevant in dryland farming, where each field has to justify the resources committed to it.
Crop rotation remains part of the bigger picture
The coming planting season should also be viewed as part of a longer cycle rather than as an isolated year.
Rotating crops such as maize and soya can help farmers manage production systems over time. Different crops place different demands on the soil, leave different residues and offer different opportunities for managing weeds, nutrients and field conditions.
The benefits of rotation are rarely measured by looking at one harvest alone.
A field’s history matters.
That long-term view is especially important in farming, where decisions made today can influence soil condition and production potential years into the future.
Preparation does not remove uncertainty
No amount of planning can determine when the rain will fall.
That is one of the realities of dryland farming in the Free State.
There will always be seasons that test even the best plans. Rain may arrive late. Heat can build quickly. Storms can bring too much water to one farm and leave another only a few kilometres away almost untouched.
The purpose of preparation is not to eliminate this uncertainty.
It is to reduce the number of additional problems a farmer has to deal with when conditions become difficult.
A prepared field, serviced planter, informed fertiliser programme and clear planting plan cannot control the weather. They can, however, make it easier to respond when the weather finally provides an opportunity.
Farming is often about being ready
From the outside, September may appear to be one of the quieter months on a Free State grain farm.
In reality, much of the groundwork for the summer crop is already taking place.
Fields are assessed. Equipment is checked. Inputs are planned. Soil conditions are considered. Decisions are made about what will be planted and where.
Then comes the part no farmer can schedule: waiting for the right rain.
When it arrives, the work done beforehand begins to matter.
For dryland farmers, that balance between careful preparation and adapting to conditions is simply part of farming in the Free State.
